Managing mental health + news life with Sam Maciag

Ep. 69| A journalist for more than 15 years in Saskatchewan, Sam Maciag got her start in newspapers, built her reputation in talk radio and now is the host of the CBC Saskatchewan News at 6, the CBC’s provincial television newscast each week night. Sam is also the brains and book nerd behind The Novel Idea Society, a massive book club that lives online and in person. And while it seems like she’s always doing something out and about, she’s also juggling family life, as the stepmom to a sweet almost 11-year-old.

Born and raised in Regina, Sk, Sam is a graduate of the University of Regina with two bachelors degrees, one in English and Religious Studies, the other in Journalism. As a journalist, she’s previously worked for the Regina Leader-Post, 980 CJME at Rawlco Radio and the Canadian Press. She’s also a sessional lecturer at the University of Regina’s School of Journalism.

Sam recently returned to work after a two-month mental health medical leave. An advocate for mental health awareness and initiatives, Sam is now leaning into stronger boundaries and into vulnerability, sharing her own struggles in the hopes of normalizing things and lifting stigma.
